Cape Wrath Art Adventure 2021!
And I need YOUR help for this one!! The project: This May 2021 I should...
Alpenglow sunsets reflecting off Aoraki/ Mt Cook, New Zealand’s highest peak. The view is painted from the shores of Lake Pukaki, the most incredible colour of turquoise due to the sediment from the glaciers feeding it.

Created from drawings and photographs taken in Fiordland National Park, while commuting to work by helicopter. Such surreally beautiful experiences, with endless hopes for further adventures unfolding in the vast landscape.

Mountains yet unclimbed, taken from aerial shots of the immense Southern Alps in New Zealand, Lord of the Rings filming country. The painting explores how alive the snow slopes are, the shifting snow pack, the constant avalanches and spindrift.

The Cobbler is one of the easiest hills to access from Glasgow, and where my love of hills started. The distinctive summit layered through the brickwork highlights the need to juggle hills and nature with urban living.

Every human has a fundamental connection to nature. This painting is exploring the connection between figure, land and water, and immersing fully in the landscape.

Experiencing mountains from a whole new perspective — paragliding from the sides of hills, moving with the complex air patterns and really intensely experiencing the wide open space of the valleys from above, the ultimate freedom in the mountains!

A wee reflection on the similarities between the NZ and Scottish landscapes — a whole world apart but I can understand why so many Scots settled there, reflected also in the place-names.

A commissioned piece, the brief for this was the view from the Queen’s View walk across the iconic Loch Lomond, capturing the drama and movement of the ever-changing weather across the skies.

Inspired by living in Milford Sound, NZ. Leaping into the water was made extra exciting by a natural phenomenon making the water incredibly dark. The salty fiord water is overlayered by a 2m layer of fresh water from the rain and waterfalls, meaning very little light can penetrate into the salt water. Sea life usually only found at greater depths flourishes close to the surface.

Inspired by many a morning dip in a loch after waking up on camping trips. There’s something special about slipping into the water as the light is changing and the day is establishing itself.

A solitary figure finding its peace amongst nature, the feeling of being beautifully small and free when immersed in the mountains. View A3 print available in shop. Oil paint and varnish on canvas. 23 x 30cm |
The permanence of the mountain overlooking the loch. Capturing the serenity of the mountain on a flat calm day, inspired by the Southern Alps of New Zealand.

The joy of a mountain ridgeline — this painting is taken from drawings of the mountain range called the Remarkables, in Queenstown NZ. I drew and photographed it in every weather and this painting captures some of the light ebbing and flowing across its peaks.

The quiet contemplation of a hill day. The source for this was a day spent hiking with a dear friend, the walking allowing us to chat in the way only a hill day can; life, loss, love and laughter. Drawing from a quiet reflective moment on the hill. |

Mixing urban and nature — sometimes hills feel like obstacles to overcome, the brickwork is representing the slow step by step process of climbing them, contrasting with the more fluid colours of the elements around us.

Summing up the beauty of feeling completely insignificant in vast landscapes. I find it immensely liberating to be a tiny figure in nature, and it puts life’s problems into perspective. Textured layers of matt and gloss varnishes are poured over the canvas to convey the movement and flow of sky and water.

Urban landscapes, investigating the marks and traces left behind in busy cityscapes. I sketch people as they walk in crowds, and on empty streets I observe the detritus and footprints left behind, layering these into studies of the urban landscape.

The iconic true summit of the Cobbler, scrambling onto this used to be a bravery test for prospective clan chiefs. Love this hill as generations before me have, easily accessible from Glasgow, full of scrambles, climbs and walks, I can’t count how often I’ve been up here! View A4 prints available in shop.
